Washington, DC - The American Psychological Association has been named a 2014 Washington Post Top Workplace. The award was announced in a special section of the Post on Sunday.

APA was recognized in the large organization category and was the only non-profit of the top 12 winners in the category. Other winners in the large company category included Comcast, GEICO and Booz Allen Hamilton.

The Post award, given annually, is based on the results of a survey of the organizations’ employees. In recognizing APA, the Post noted the Association’s commitment to community involvement and its programs designed to encourage all employees to make healthy lifestyle choices.

“One of my initial goals when I became CEO was to ensure that APA was a great place to work and viewed as one of the best places to work in the region. As a psychologist, and part of the APA workforce, I understand how important it is that we have a work environment that supports collaboration, encourages innovation, provides direction and feedback, allows for work-life balance, and fosters health and well-being. This is a particularly proud day for me and for the entire APA family,” said Norman B. Anderson, APA CEO, in response to the award announcement. 

In total, 150 D.C. metro area companies were recognized by the Top Workplaces program in three categories - large, medium and small.

The American Psychological Association, in Washington, D.C., is the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States. APA's membership includes nearly 130,000 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants and students. Through its divisions in 54 subfields of psychology and affiliations with 60 state, territorial and Canadian provincial associations, APA works to advance the creation, communication and application of psychological knowledge to benefit society and improve people's lives.
