Carson City, Nevada - The Division of Public and Behavioral Health (DPBH) announces the recent selection of Antonina Capurro, DMD, MPH, MBA as the new State Dental Health Officer (SDHO). The State Public Health Dental Hygienist is Judy A. White, RDH, MPH.
Dr. Capurro, State Dental Health Officer (SDHO), will report directly to Nevada’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. John M. DiMuro, DO, MBA and be tasked with making recommendations to the Advisory Committee on the State Program for Oral Health, the Division of Public and Behavioral Health administrators and staff and, when needed, the Nevada State Legislature regarding programs in Nevada for public dental health. The SDHO will work in collaboration with the State Public Health Dental Hygienist and the State Oral Health Program Manager to conduct surveillance activities, track disease rates and analyze oral health needs of Nevada residents. Other duties include increasing public and health care providers’ knowledge of the importance of oral health; the relationship between oral health and systemic health; the factors that increase the risk of a person developing oral diseases; and the prevention and treatment of oral diseases. The Oral Health team will promote and improve access to high-quality dental care services; support and further cultivate Nevada’s oral health stakeholder network; and ensure evaluation of program systems and activities.
Before devoting herself to the Division of Public and Behavioral Health, Dr. Capurro was a full time clinical faculty member at UNLV School of Dental Medicine (SDM). In this capacity, she had the privilege to inspire and challenge future dental professionals; she also designed, implemented, and directed numerous programs. Dr. Capurro is dedicated to community outreach and was continually involved in activities such as Seal Nevada South, Give Kids a Smile, and SDM’s Saturday Clinics. In addition to her clinical and administrative duties with SDM, she was the director of the complete denture prosthodontics course and the director of the simulated patient care course that focuses on fixed prosthodontics. She most recently was engaged in a variety of research projects focusing on access to care for adult patients with special healthcare needs, anatomy of deciduous teeth, and dental public health education. Dr. Capurro’s educational background includes earning the degrees of Doctor of Dental Medicine, Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing, and Master of Public Health with a concentration in Healthcare Administration and Policy. It is Dr. Capurro’s goal to use her education and experience to improve the lives and oral health of Nevada’s citizens
Judy A White, the State Public Health Dental Hygienist, reports directly to the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. John M. DiMuro, DO, MBA and will work with him, the State Dental Health Officer and Oral Health Program (OHP) Manager to develop, modify, or identify oral health education modules for various audiences, and assist in delivering training. The position’s other duties include coordinating, conducting and analyzing oral health surveillance projects; developing reports, white papers and grant applications; overseeing data collection, monitoring, and providing technical assistance for School-Based/School-Linked oral health projects including dental sealant programs; and assisting the OHP Manager in developing program sustainability.
Judy White is a dental hygienist with a bachelor’s degree in health care management and a master’s degree in dental public health. She worked as a clinical dental hygienist for 15 years; she has also worked as the director of a dental assisting program, an instructor in a dental hygiene program, and taught an online community dental health certificate program. She was an assistant professor at the University of Kentucky’s College of Dentistry, and the Deputy State Dental Director for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. As the Manager of Research and Analysis for the Arizona Department of Health Services Office of Oral Health, Ms. White developed and implemented data collection, analysis and reporting for surveillance systems and for clinical and workforce surveys. She managed a $2 million budget in oral health programming in the fourth largest county in the nation, and as the Oral Health Program Officer for Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation, she managed a competitive grants process, providing technical assistance to over 30 grantees across the state.
