This second performance of the RCO's 2017-18 season features three pieces from around the turn of the nineteenth century. The concert begins with a Symphony for string orchestra written by Felix Mendelssohn when he was a teenager. After that, Mr. Sachs takes up his trumpet as soloist in Johann Nepomuk Hummel's Trumpet Concerto. The performance concludes with Mozart's brilliant "Posthorn" Serenade.

Support for these concerts has been provided by a generous grant from The E.L. Cord Foundation. Mr. Sachs's appearance with the Reno Chamber Orchestra is sponsored by Stephen Myerson.

Michael Sachs joined The Cleveland Orchestra as Principal Trumpet in 1988. Praised by critics for his "spectacular chops," and "radiant tone," he is recognized internationally as a leading soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, teacher, author and clinician. Mr. Sachs is the longest serving Principal Trumpet in the history of The Cleveland Orchestra. He has also appeared as guest soloist with numerous orchestras and chamber groups worldwide. Along with his active performance schedule, Mr. Sachs serves as Chairman of the Brass Division and Head of the Trumpet Department at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He serves on the faculty of leading summer festivals, and regularly presents master classes and workshops at conservatories and universities throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. He is the author of The Orchestral Trumpet, a 176-page comprehensive book and CD overview of standard orchestral trumpet repertoire.
